Extended Repairs and Support for Businesses
by Assemblywoman Dunn
I am writing to provide you with an important update on the ongoing I-80 repairs. Recent testing revealed a significant void beneath the eastbound lanes in Wharton. While I-80 westbound remains stable, the repairs to the eastbound lanes are now anticipated to take longer than initially expected.
NJDOT crews are working 24/7 with drilling and grouting operations to stabilize the roadway, and the team is taking every precaution to ensure the safety of all involved.
Rest assured, I am in close contact with NJDOT Commissioner O’Connor and local officials to ensure that the necessary steps are taken for a safe and lasting solution. We are working together to monitor progress and ensure a fix that will secure the safety of all commuters and prevent any future disruptions.
Traffic detours remain in place, and motorists are advised to follow alternate routes to avoid delays. Please plan extra time for travel and stay updated on conditions by visiting 511nj.org for real-time traffic information.
In September, I introduced Assembly Bill 4865, legislation designed to support small businesses impacted by public highway projects like these. The bill provides a temporary sales tax exemption for qualifying small businesses located within construction zones.
Due to the ongoing repairs to I-80, many local store owners are already experiencing a 15-20 percent dip in revenue and patronage. I will continue to advocate for swift passage of this important legislation to ensure we help alleviate some of the financial burdens on businesses that are experiencing disruptions, ensuring they can continue to operate despite the ongoing construction.
I understand the inconvenience this situation has caused. I urge everyone to be patient as we work to resolve this issue as efficiently as possible. Your safety is my top priority, and I will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure the work progresses as smoothly as possible.
Thank you for your continued understanding and support as we work through this challenge together.
